Transport in Sudbury 

From Sudbury, residents can take the A134 for 30 minutes to reach Bury St Edmunds, or travel south along the A131 to Braintree and onwards for London Stansted Airport (50 minutes’ drive). As for motorway access, the M11 can be accessed in 45 minutes using the A120 for travel into London in just under 2 hours.  

Sudbury also has its own train station, which operates hourly services into Marks Tey and London Liverpool Street with only one change.  

Shopping in Sudbury 

Sudbury is an active market town where residents can still enjoy regular events hosted every Thursday and Saturday near Market Hill. Several independent retailers operate stalls there, including traders selling butcher’s meat, artisan food, clothing, pet supplies, and freshly baked bread. The town also has a thriving high street home to small brands such as Rafi’s Spicebox, the Sudbury Mill Shop and Dinky Treats. As for a more modern retail experience, you can drive into Colchester to visit the Lion Walk Shopping Centre, where you’ll find high street outlets like JD Sports, River Island, and Primark.  

Things to do in Sudbury 

As a historic town, Sudbury has plenty of heritage sites to explore. There’s a museum at the Sudbury Heritage Centre, where you can browse a number of local exhibits and the Sudbury Photo Archive for free. You can also find an array of Thomas Gainsborough’s paintings on display at Gainsborough's House, located just down the road from the museum. Local landmarks are available at Salter's Hall – a striking half-timber building – and The Market Cross monument in Lavenham. As for seasonal entertainment, events are hosted at the Kentwell Hall stately home in Long Melford, while you can visit the Norman fortress of Hedingham Castle to see jousting competitions and watch an outdoor cinema.
