Getting to and from Abbotsham
Winsford Park is located off Abbotsham Road with easy access onto the A39 Atlantic Highway and further access to the M5 towards the city of Exeter which is 44 miles away.
The closest train station is in Barnstaple, a 20-minute drive away. From Barnstaple, you can catch regular, hourly services to the likes of Exeter, Plymouth and London (via Exeter St David’s).
There is also a bus stop close to the development. If you grab either the 15 or 15a bus, they’ll get you into Bideford town centre in about 15 minutes.
The nearest airports are Exeter Airport which is an hour and half away by car. There’s also Newquay Airport, which is an hour and 50 minutes away.
A stretch of the South West Coast Path also runs along Abbotsham Cliffs providing a variety of walks to explore.
Abbotsham is also situated within a 10-minute drive of the popular seaside town, Bideford.
A historic port town, Bideford offers much more than its coastal views, with its art galleries – including the Bideford Arts Centre and the Burton at Bideford, its weekly farmers’ market – that takes place every Saturday, and its selection of shops, most notably Affinity Devon – a shopping centre, home to over 25 different outlet stores.
Slightly further out, a 20-minute drive away, there’s also the town of Barnstaple.
One of the larger towns in North Devon, Barnstaple is where one is likely to find some of the bigger chain stores. The town also has its own leisure centre, boasting two large swimming pools, a gym, soft play areas, and an “endless” indoor ski slope, as well as a little café.
There are a couple of brilliant schools within a 20-minute walk of the development including a primary school and a sixth form college.
There’s St Helen’s Church of England Primary School, a 20-minute walk from Winsford Park.
The school’s special SHINE curriculum allows each student to develop at their own pace and encourages each student to adopt traditional Christian values, such as empathy, kindness and mutual respect.
Accepting students between the age of 2 and 11, the school received a “Good” rating during its most recent Ofsted inspection in June 2024.
For older kids, there’s Bideford College, a 17-minute walk from Winsford Park.
Known for their excellent careers-focused programmes, the school offers young people the practical experience they need to prepare them for working life.
Catering to students ages 11-18, the school also received a “Good” rating during its most recent Ofsted inspection in June 2022.
Living in Abbotsham
Then there’s The Big Sheep! An admittedly unusual name for an amusement park, The Big Sheep is one of Abbotsham’s best-known attractions.
A formerly family-owned farm that has since been converted into an amusement park, The Big Sheep boasts a number of rides, restaurants, shops, laser tag, swan pedalos, and both indoor & outdoor playgrounds.
The stars of the show though are, of course, the barnyard animals, with animal shows hosted throughout the year.
