Derbyshire is located in the East Midlands, between Nottinghamshire to the east and Cheshire to the west, with the Peak District National Park being found to the north of the county. 

Transport in Derbyshire

Derbyshire is served by a large stretch of the A6, which runs from the Manchester town of New Mills to the city of Derby. It takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to cross Derbyshire using this A-road, a trip of around 37 miles.  

The M1 passes through the east of Derby, with junctions 24-30. This motorway will connect you to Nottingham in an hour and Leicester in 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can also take trains from into Sheffield, Glasgow, Birmingham New Street, and London St Pancras from Derby Station.   

Shopping in Derbyshire 

Located in Derby City Centre, The Derbion has nearly 200 shops and a number of restaurants and cafes. You can shop for the latest fashion at M&S, MOSS and New Look, or browse for jewellery in Beaverbrooks and H. Samuel.  

If you’d like to experience the rural side of Derbyshire’s retail scene, the Bakewell Market in the Derbyshire Dales is a 100-stall market selling everything from flowers and jewellery to warm street food. It operates between 9am and 4pm every Monday.

Derbyshire is renowned for the Peak District National Park; a landscape of moorland, caves and cliffs spanning 1,437 square kilometres. It takes up the majority of northern Derbyshire, offering miles of hiking routes and attractions for those visiting and living in Derbyshire. Some of these include the Blue John Cavern and the Peak Caves – home to the deepest cave in the UK. Hikes are available up the famous peaks of Kinder Scout and Mam Tor, while the Ladybower Reservoir is open for watersports and fishing in Snake Pass.

Glossop

Glossop is Derbyshire’s northernmost town, serving as a gateway between Manchester and the Peak District. As it’s a 30-minute drive from Manchester City Centre and a 40-minute drive from Sheffield, it’s the ideal location for commuters. 

Glossop has a train station along the Piccadilly to Hadfield line, as well as two garden centres and vibrant shopping district along the high street. It also has direct access to the Manchester moorlands and the beautiful Snake Woodland. 

Chapel-en-le-Frith

Located in the Peak District, in the north of Derbyshire, Chapel-en-le-Frith is a small town popular for its safe neighbourhoods and close-knit community.  

It’s famous for its beautiful views across the Peaks, its historic pubs and its proximity to the Blue John Mines and Cave Dale. It also has its own train station along the Piccadilly to Buxton line, and direct access to the A6 making it easy to access.
