Where is Gloucestershire?

It encompasses the mouth of the River Severn, with South Wales sitting across the river and along its western edge.  

Transport in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire’s sole city, Gloucester, has its own 4-platorm train station. From here, commuters can catch regular trains to the likes of London Paddington, Bristol, Nottingham, Cardiff, and Worcester.  

Gloucestershire is also bisected by the M5, with M5 access points to be found in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stonehouse, and Ashchurch.  

The M5 connects much of Gloucester to the nearby cities of Birmingham and Bristol, making it easy to access both cities’ international airports.  

Shopping in Gloucestershire

Those living in Gloucestershire benefit from many shopping opportunities, with centres and outlets located in Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham.  

There are several farmers’ markets spread out across Gloucestershire, including the award-winning  Stroud Farmers’ Market, the Gloucester Farmers’ Market, the Orchard Street Market on the Gloucester Quays, and the Moreton-in-Marsh Retail Market.  

There’s also the popular and permanent Eastgate Indoor Market in Gloucester.   

Things to do in Gloucestershire

The Museum of Gloucester is the most famous in the county, featuring Roman artefacts and the oldest backgammon set in the world.  

Speaking of artefacts, Gloucestershire’s heritage is on full display wherever you turn, from the walls of St Briavel’s Castle to the ruins of Chedworth Roman Villa. 

Gloucestershire is also home to the Forest of Dean and the Cotswold Hills, providing several scenic walking routes for residents to explore.  

If you’re a keen caver, you can also explore the Clearwell Caves or, if you’re into rock climbing, you can give Cleeve Hill a go.

Tewkesbury 

Famous for the imposing walls of its abbey, Tewkesbury is a peaceful, riverside town situated along the northern border of Gloucestershire. Its weekly markets are popular with residents and visitors alike.  

The town is just a stone’s throw away from an M5 access point, with the M5 connecting Tewkesbury to the likes of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Bristol.

Cirencester

Cirencester is a town in south Gloucestershire, nestled in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, with plenty of nearby nature reserves and hiking trails to explore.  

The town is about half an hour’s drive from the likes of Gloucester and Swindon, with Cirencester also boasting its own National Express bus stop – with coaches running from Cirencester to the likes of London and Gloucester.  

The nearest train station – Kemble Railway Station - is about 15 minutes’ drive away from Cirencester, with several services running from Kemble to the likes of London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa.  

Coleford

Sitting on the edge of the Wye Valley National Landscape, Coleford is a pleasant looking town situated near the border between England and Wales, with the stunning Welsh countryside within easy reach of the town.  

Coleford is just a few minutes’ drive from the White Rocks nature reserve (part of the Wildlife Trust) and the RSPB Nagshead.  

Coleford also has a vibrant shopping scene, with a popular retail park and several high street stores situated in its town centre. There’s also the Coleford Country Market, which takes place at the weekend, and usually has all manner of fresh produce, locally made treats and handcrafted gifts on display.
