Poynton is a town in Cheshire, located on the edge of the Peak District. It’s known for its village-like atmosphere, friendly community and mining heritage that’s still celebrated throughout the town today.

Where is Poynton? 

Poynton is situated in the North West of England, just southeast of Manchester and just north of Macclesfield. It neighbours the National Trust’s Lyme Park, as well as the hills of the Peak District National Park a few miles to the east.    

Transport in Poynton 

Poynton has its own train station on the western edge of the town, providing direct access to Manchester Piccadilly in less than 30 minutes, with stops at Macclesfield, Bramhall and Stockport along the way.  

It’s a 20-minute drive to Stockport town centre via the A6, which also connects to the M60. Manchester Airport is also nearby, being just 15 minutes' drive away. 

Shopping in Poynton 

The Poynton Artisan Market runs every month at the Poynton Sports Club, where you can browse unique crafts made by independent artists.  

Park Lane and Queensway are also key shopping districts in Poynton, offering a wide selection of local shops and restaurants.   

The town is also close to the Village Square in Bramhall, an open-air mall with a pottery studio, craft shop and several toy shops, as well as numerous charity stores.    

Things to do in Poynton 

Poynton is famous for its proximity to Lyme Park, a 1,300-acre estate covering a swathe of Peak District moorland and a hilly deer park.  

You can also walk from Macclesfield to Marple along Middlewood Way, an accessible hiking and cycling trail, or take woodland strolls through the Prince’s or Lady’s Inclines.   

Residents can also enjoy live music at The Acoustic Lounge, explore the storied history of engines at the Anson Engine Museum or take a ride on the Brookside Miniature Railway.

Cheadle

Full of quiet suburban charm, Cheadle is just 15 minutes’ drive from of Poynton. With leafy streets, good schools and strong commuter links, this village is an ideal place to buy a family home.   

Cheadle also benefits from numerous play parks, sports fields and wooded walking areas, as well as a golf club and a retail park at Handforth Dean. It’s also located within easy reach of the city of Manchester and the neighbouring town of Stockport. 

Bramhall 

Bramhall is an affluent village, about 15 minutes out from Poynton. It’s known for its picturesque green spaces, including Bramhall Park - with its landscaped gardens and woodland walks.  

Bramhall is also home to a number of desirable schools as well as whole host of amenities, including a selection of independent boutiques, traditional shops, cafés, and restaurants - all within walking distance of the village centre.   

Macclesfield 

Macclesfield is a large town, just 20 minutes south of Poynton. It has a vibrant town centre, beautifully paved pathways and a popular local market.  

Residents in Macclesfield benefit from the town’s cinema, the Grosvenor Shopping Centre and the Macclesfield Leisure Centre - with its own swimming pool, gym and athletics track.  

From Macclesfield, it's easy to get to Manchester within about half an hour, with a train service running frequently between Macclesfield and Manchester Piccadilly. 

There’s also a large bus station on Queen Victoria Street and a number of A-roads running through the town, connecting Macclesfield to the likes of Chelford and Alderley Edge.
