Merseyside is a northern metropolitan county, best known for being home to the vibrant and historic city of Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles and one of the UK’s art capitals.

Transport options in Merseyside  

Merseyside offers an extensive public transport network connecting commuters to towns and cities across the North of England.  

Liverpool City Centre, for one, has four train stations—James Street, Moorfields, Lime Street, and Liverpool Central—connecting commuters to destinations like Manchester, Chester, and Birmingham. The city also has three major bus stations. St. Helens and Prescot also have their own bus and train stations too, connecting the towns to the rest of the county.  

Merseyside also boasts links to a number of motorways, including the M57, the M58, the M62, and the M3, connecting the county to the likes of Manchester and Birmingham.  

Where is Merseyside located?

Merseyside is in the Northwest of England, around the Mersey estuary. It includes the city of Liverpool and towns like Bootle and Birkenhead. It borders Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and connects to Wales through Flintshire.  

Major cities and towns in Merseyside  

St. Helens

Located between Liverpool and Manchester, St. Helens sits within the industrial belt of the region.  

Known as the birthplace of modern glass making, you can learn more about its history at the World of Glass Museum and explore its historic railway network in the North West Museum of Road Transport.  

Despite being largely urban, this town also offers plenty of green space including over 100 wildlife sites and plenty of walking trails. It is also well-connected to other towns like Warrington, Widnes and Prescot and offers three train stations and its own bus network.  

Knowsley

Situated on the outskirts of Liverpool, just 5 miles from the city centre, Knowsley is a popular place to live especially for families with young children.  

Knowsley is a green borough, home to over 150 parks and 600-hectares of green spaces.  

The area is famous for Knowsley Hall, a stately home over 600 years old, and the iconic Knowsley Safari Park. The park features a five-mile safari drive and foot safari, with over 500 animals, including lions, tigers, rhinos, meerkats, and giraffes. 

Liverpool

Liverpool is a vibrant cathedral and port city with a rich cultural heritage and a stunning waterfront along the River Mersey, featuring historic docks, restaurants, bars, and unique hotels. 

It’s well-connected to other northern towns and cities, as well as the rest of the country, with multiple train stations and a strong bus network. Its main train station, Liverpool Lime Street, offers services to destinations like London, Manchester, and Birmingham. The city’s major airport is the Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which serves over 70 destinations across Africa, Europe, and the British Isles. 

Known as the birthplace of The Beatles, Liverpool has a lively music scene with festivals like Liverpool Sound City and iconic venues such as The Cavern Club.  

With attractions like Liverpool Cathedral, Royal Albert Dock, and Tate Liverpool, the city offers a perfect mix of entertainment, culture and history to explore.
