Where is Greater Manchester?

Greater Manchester is a county just south of Lancashire, north of Cheshire and west of both Derbyshire and West Yorkshire.  

The county neighbours Merseyside to the west and overlooks the Peak District, with its stunning valleys and gorges. 

Transport in Greater Manchester

Several of the major towns and cities in Greater Manchester are connected through the Bee Network, an interconnected network of buses, trams and trains that connect many of the major towns in Greater Manchester – including the likes of Altrincham, Eccles, Rochdale, and Ashton-under-Lyne – to eachother as well as to Manchester City Centre.  

There are almost 100 train stations scattered across Greater Manchester, with the largest of which being Manchester Piccadilly Station, with several services running from Manchester Piccadilly to London’s Euston Station as well as to the likes of Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, and Cardiff, amongst other major UK destinations, a day.  

The M60 also connects Manchester City Centre to a number of suburbs across Greater Manchester, including the likes of Trafford and Oldham.  

The city of Manchester also offers its own airport – an airport offering international flights and the third busiest airport in the UK.  

Shopping in Greater Manchester

As might be expected, the city of Manchester, as one of Greater Manchester’s two cities and the largest settlement in the county, is one of the major retail districts in Greater Manchester, with the likes of The Arndale and The Trafford Centre being amongst the most popular.  

However, there is more to shopping in Greater Manchester than just the outlets found its namesake city, with The Rock Shopping Centre in Bury, Middlebrook Retail & Leisure Park in Bolton, Crownpoint Shopping Park in Denton, and Stockport Retail Park in Stockport, all similarly standing out due to their sheer size and the variety of retailers they house.  

Things to do in Greater Manchester

Manchester city centre is an easy choice for any social butterfly, with its eclectic nightlife attracting people from all over the county. From axe throwing, to escape rooms, to independent cinemas and everything in between, you’ll never run out of things to do in the city centre. 

For those with little ones, The Trafford Centre is a convenient pick – offering a LEGOLAND discovery centre and a SEA LIFE aquatic centre all under one roof, it’s a go-to destination for families with young children.  

For the more adventurous, Heaton Park – a sizeable public park in Prestwich – offers the thrilling Zip World – an adventure park full of high ropes and zip lines.  

There’s also the Debdale Outdoor Centre in Gorton – the perfect spot for any sailing enthusiasts or anyone looking for an outdoor climbing route to explore.  

A key event in Greater Manchester’s social calendar is the popular Parklife Festival – a two-day music festival that takes place every June in Heaton Park.

Cheadle is also home to a popular golf club and is within easy reach of the likes of Crewe, Alderley Edge, Stoke-on-Trent, and Manchester Piccadilly by train, being less than 20 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly by train.

Atherton 

Situated on the outskirts of the city of Manchester, and neighbouring the town of Bolton, Atherton is ideal for someone looking to still be able to commute easily to the city centre without the stress, the congestion and the expenses that comes with living in the city.
