Where is Tiverton? 

Tiverton is located in central Devon, just under 9 miles south of Exmoor and west of the Blackdown Hills. It’s a short distance from the border between Devon and Somerset, with connections into Bristol via the M5.  

Transport in Tiverton 

Tiverton’s A361 provides a direct link to the M5 motorway, connecting at Junction 27 to provide a 30-minute drive to Exeter. In the other direction, the A361 leads to Barnstaple and towards the Bristol Channel, while Tiverton’s A396 offers a route into the Exmoor National Park to the north.  

As for public transport, the Tiverton Parkway train station is a 15-minute drive away, where you can catch direct services to Exmoor, Penzance, Plymouth, London, and even Manchester and Edinburgh.

Tiverton is a market town famous for its Pannier Market. This outdoor hub is located in Market Square and opens stalls on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, while Mondays and Thursdays are reserved for other retail events. You can find a range of locally sourced produce and handmade crafts at the Tiverton markets, including clothes, beaded jewellery, soft toys, plants, and homegrown vegetables. As for permanent shopfronts, Tiverton is known for its independent retailers, with unique clothing and gifts available at shops such as the Green Door Emporium, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill, and the Liznojan bookshop.  

Things to do in Tiverton 

Due to its long history, the market town of Tiverton offers plenty of historic attractions close to home. The Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life displays local exhibits inspired by the town's history, while Tiverton Castle allows you to walk around the landscaped gardens and take guided tours through the manor house. The National Trust’s Knightshayes Court is also close by, where 262 acres of parkland and a Gothic Revival manor house are available just north of the town. You can even take a ride on one of Tiverton’s traditional horse-drawn barges, or hire your own boat to ride down Tiverton canal.

Pinhoe is a small suburb just 10 minutes north-east of Exeter city centre and around half an hour from Tiverton. Pinhoe’s train station is also just one stop down the line from Exeter Central, providing trains into both Exeter and London.
