Traditional old shops such as an ironmonger and a greengrocer sit alongside larger high street names, yet the town centre itself remains a pretty, friendly and community-focused place where families are welcome and there’s plenty to see and do all year round. There’s a farmers’ market held on the first and third Thursday of every month, and each year, Thornbury has a mop fair, a carnival and an arts festival. There’s a very well-equipped leisure centre and library within easy reach of our houses for sale in Thornbury and, as you would expect, a doctors' surgery, dentists and opticians in the town along with a Hospital and Medical Centre. The Mundy playing fields include a children’s play area and sports ground and there are a number of thriving football, rugby, cricket, badminton and scout clubs, as well as a Lawn Tennis Club and skate park. The town is best known for its castle, a Tudor structure intended as a home for the Duke of Buckingham Edward Stafford, who was later beheaded for treason. The castle was then confiscated by King Henry VIII who stayed there for ten days in 1535 with Anne Boleyn. It is now a five-star hotel and restaurant set in beautifully manicured grounds, where you can go and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea. You can take the heritage trail and discover all of the town’s historically significant buildings.
