Where is Nottinghamshire?

Nottinghamshire is located in the East Midlands, just south of Yorkshire and north of Leicestershire. It contains the city of Nottingham and borders the likes of Lincoln, Sheffield, Doncaster, and Derby. 

Transport in Nottinghamshire

Nottingham, Nottinghamshire’s sole city, houses the county’s major train station. Nottingham’s train station has 9 platforms and provides regular services to the likes of Cardiff, London, Leeds, Crewe, Birmingham, and Liverpool. There are also a number of trains to Mansfield, from where you can then catch buses right into the heart of Sherwood Forest. 

The M1 also passes through Nottinghamshire, with access junctions situated at Selston and Kimberley.  

There is also a network of A-roads that run through the county, connecting the likes of Nottingham, Mansfield, Worksop, and Newark-on-Trent to one another.  

Shopping in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire’s biggest shopping mall is The Victoria Centre in Nottingham. This large indoor complex hosts over 120 shops, including popular high street names such as Accessorize, Boots, Pandora, Next, and Goldsmiths.  

You can also visit a range of markets dotted across the Nottinghamshire countryside, including the likes of the Newark Royal Market, Hyson Green Market and the Wollaton and Beeston Farmers’ Markets. 

Things to do in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire’s biggest attraction is Sherwood Forest, where residents can hike, birdwatch, take guided tours, or even visit Go Ape.  

Sticking with the Robin Hood theme, Nottinghamshire is also home to the family friendly theme park, Robin Hoods Wheelgate Park, which is situated just outside the town of Mansfield. Alongside its many rides, the popular theme park also has a falconry centre, animal barns, a mirror maze, and several soft play areas. 

The county also has a plethora of well-preserved historical sites, including the Newstead Abbey, which dates back to the late 12 century, the Workhouse Museum, and Mr Straw’s House – a 1920s National Trust period home in Worksop.  

The best places to buy new builds in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire is home to several towns and villages that would make for an excellent home. Below are a few of our favourite: 

Beeston

Beeston is a town situated on the outskirts of Nottingham, to the southwest of the city.  

Its proximity to Nottingham means that that residents of Beeston enjoy easy access to several of the city’s amenities, including its many leisure centres, restaurants, train station, and its university. 

Indeed, the University of Nottingham is only 5 minutes’ drive from Beeston. 

Newark-on-Trent

Newark-on-Trent sits near the eastern border of Nottinghamshire and is a large riverside town that lies halfway between Lincoln and Nottingham. 

It sprawls across the intersection of the A1, A17 and A46, making it easy to drive from Newark-on-Trent to the likes of Grantham, Lincoln, Leicester, and Mansfield.  

The town is known for its rich heritage, with the Palace Theatre, Newark Castle, and the National Civil War Centre all cultural highlights of the town. 

Edwinstowe

Edwinstowe is commonly referred to as ‘the heart of Sherwood Forest’. 

Situated just north of Rufford Abbey, Edwinstowe is surrounded by a number parkland and nature reserves, being particularly popular amongst those who thrive when they have the outdoors on their doorstep.  

Edwinstowe’s town centre is within 10 minutes’ walk of the Sherwood Forest Nature Reserve, with the town centre home to a grocery store, a library and the South Forest Leisure Complex.  

The town is also just 4 minutes’ drive from an A614 access points which connects the town to Nottingham.
