This is a hugely popular tourist attraction all year round, and with so much countryside all around, you can easily spend an entire year here exploring. The village of Cheddar has an extensive and interesting history. As long ago as 1130, the beauty of Cheddar Gorge was described as ‘one of the four wonders of England’. The Kings of Wessex Academy secondary school is built on the site of an Anglo Saxon Palace, while the ruins of St Columbanus, a 13th century chapel, can still be seen. Those in need of more serious retail therapy will find plenty on offer in the ancient city of Wells, which is just nine miles away and in Bristol, around 18 miles away. Less than an hour’s drive away, Catherine Hill in Frome has an enviable reputation for its range of quirky independent shops, vintage boutiques and monthly artisans market.

Transport in and around Cheddar
