Transport in Liverpool
Liverpool is served by several bus routes and has 4 train stations, with the largest of which being Liverpool Lime Street – which offers several services a day to the likes of Manchester, York, Leeds, and Southport.
Merseyrail - a rail network specifically catering to Liverpool and its surrounding areas in Merseyside – also provides services to the city’s neighbouring towns and villages via either the North Line or the Wirral Line.
There’s also the Mersey Ferry – which you can take to Wirral, with the Stena Line – which operates out of Liverpool Port - offering a route to Belfast
Liverpool is connected to the likes of Leeds via the M62, as well as to London via the M6. Other major roads that pass through Liverpool include the M57, M58, and M53.
Liverpool also has its own international airport situated on the outskirts of the city – the Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
Shopping in Liverpool
One of Liverpool's major shopping centres is the open-air Liverpool ONE, which offers more than 170 shops, eateries, and experiences.
MetQuarter is only a short walk from Liverpool ONE and acts as an extension to the shopping centre, housing a range of luxurious brands.
Other great shopping centres in the city include St John's, Cavern Walks Boutique Shopping Centre, and Clayton Square Shopping Centre.
Liverpool also has its fair share of markets that take place throughout the week, with the biggest ones being Lark Lane Market, which sees around 60 traders selling a range of fresh produce and crafts, and Great Homer Street Market, which offers over 140 stalls.
Things to do in Liverpool
There are numerous free museums across the city, including the World Museum, and the Museum of Liverpool.
Popular landmarks include the Liverpool Cathedral, which is the largest in Britain, offering a great view of the city from its rooftop. There’s also the Royal Albert Dock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The dock is where you’ll find the Tate Gallery and The Beatles Museum, as well as several shops and eateries.
You can also take a short trip to The Wirral, where you’ll find Eureka! - a fun educational experience perfect for children and teens.
Less than half an hour from the city, there’s also Knowsley Safari, which is home to rhinos, lions, and more!

Woolton
South of Liverpool, you’ll find Woolton, a suburb named one of the best places to live by The Sunday Times (2025). Commuting from Woolton to central Liverpool by car, bus, or train is easy, with the suburb a little over half an hour from the city centre. Woolton has several parks and a number of schools, making it ideal for those with young children.
Allerton
Young professionals and families alike will also be interested in Allerton, a popular suburban area in the southeast of Liverpool, near Woolton.
Allerton Road is one of Liverpool’s more popular shopping destinations, with its wide array of high-street stores. The area is also known for having several schools rated Outstanding by Ofsted and is less than half an hour from Liverpool city centre.
Aigburth
Aigburth is a more rural suburb, situated in south Liverpool. The area is less than 20 minutes from the city centre.
The town offers a number of independent shops and restaurants, with Lark Lane being its main retail district.
Popular parks in Aigburth include Sefton Park, an expansive park, with a beautiful greenhouse, that’s the perfect fit for this leafy suburb.
