Transport in Colchester
Colchester is well-connected with plenty of transport options to get in, out and around the city.
Commuters can enjoy easy travel with the city's three train stations:
- Colchester North - the city’s primary station, situated in the city centre, Colchester North offers direct services to London’s Liverpool Street station as well as Ipswich, Northwich and Clacton-on-Sea
- Colchester Town – considered Colchester’s secondary station, this slightly smaller station also offers services to London’s Liverpool Street, as well as regular services to Walton-on-the-Naze
- Hythe – a station regularly frequented by those from the University of Essex, trains departing from here also go to London’s Liverpool Street, as well as Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze.
It should also be noted that there’s a large bus station in the city centre too, near Colchester North railway station. Buses from here include services to places like Lexden, The Hythe, Highwoods, Stanway, Chelmsford, and Basildon.
Colchester’s proximity to the A12 is also ideal, with the road linking Colchester to Ipswich to the north and London to the south. The A120 is also nearby, providing an easy route to the coastal town of Clacton-on-Sea.

Lexden
Only a 7-minute drive from Colchester city centre, Lexden is perfect for young families due to diverse selection of highly rated schools. The area also offers several nearby nature reserves, with ponds, meadows and wildflowers that bloom beautifully in the warmer months.
