Schools and education in Shinfield

There are several infant and junior schools within close proximity, popular choices include the new Alder Grove Primary School,  Shinfield Infant and Nursery School and Shinfield St Mary's CE Junior School. 

There is also a great selection of secondary schools nearby, three of which have an 'outstanding' Ofsted rating. These are UTC Reading, Reading School and Kendrick School. 

The University of Reading is a popular choice for school-leavers with a selection of over 200 courses available.

Transport in and around Shinfield

The A33 and M4 are just a short distance away, and allow for simple journeys to be made to locations including Basingstoke, Maidenhead and West London. If you need or want to use rail travel, Earley station is around 4 miles from Shinfield Gardens, and has regular and reliable services to Reading and London Waterloo.

Reading town centre is just 5.2 miles away and Reading railway station 4.5 miles. Local towns of Wokingham and Bracknell are just 6.6 and 13 miles respectively. Further afield, but still very commutable are Basingstoke 16 miles, Maidenhead 17 miles, Slough 22 miles, Newbury 22 miles and Oxford 43 miles. 

Reading is a major junction point of the National Rail system making Reading station a major transfer point and terminus.  Railway lines link Reading to both London Paddington and London Waterloo with Crossrail links coming soon.  Trains to London from Reading can take just 27 minutes at peak times.  Reading Station also connects with trains to Oxford, Birmingham and the North, the West Country, South Wales and the South Coast. 

An exciting new development for Reading will be the Crossrail link where the new rail line will run from Reading and Heathrow in the west under tunnels to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.  This is currently expected to be fully completed in 2022. 

Leisure

Windsor Castle is a must-see attraction, just half an hour away, while much closer to home is the Duke of Wellington’s house Stratfield Saye, given to the Duke by a grateful nation after the Battle of Waterloo, with loads of family attractions in Wellington Country Park. 

There are events and festivals throughout the year – the biggest and most famous is Reading Festival, running since 1971, the second largest UK music festival after Glastonbury. Other events include the long running Community Carnival in May, the Children's Festival (three weeks in May - June), the Real Ale and Jazz Festival (July) and WaterFest (June). 

Reading town centre itself must not be forgotten being one of the UK's top retail destinations with the Oracle Shopping Centre, Broad Street Mall and the Hexagon theatre.   The town also boasts six museums and the ancient Abbey Ruins, burial place of Henry I.  The Oracle has a wide range of high street shops, restaurants and bars making it a great place to both shop and relax.
