Local housebuilder supports Campsea Ashe church tower appeal

Housebuilder Bloor Homes has donated £5,000 to St John The Baptist Church in Campsea Ashe to help with fundraising efforts for its church tower appeal.

Bloor Homes is currently building the Longwood Fields development in the nearby village of Melton. Monika Hanlon, Sales Director at Bloor Homes Eastern, said: “On hearing of the appeal by St John the Baptist Church to undertake urgent repairs to its tower, we were keen to help out.

“As a responsible housebuilder, we are always looking for ways to invest in the local communities where we build. The very best communities for modern day living have a rich balance of old and new build. The church at Campsea Ashe has long been a landmark in the local area; we hope the fundraising appeal ensures it remains for local people to enjoy for centuries to come.

“We wish the church every success with its fundraising and would encourage other local businesses to get on board and support the appeal."

St John the Baptist Church is a grade II listed building dating back to the 14th Century. In 2015, a routine inspection of the fabric of the church revealed that as a result of centuries of wear and tear, coupled with the repercussions of unsuitable repair work carried out in victorian times, the tower was in urgent need of repairs.

The Rev’d Canon Graham Hedger from St John the Baptist Church, said: “We are a small church community who care deeply about our church and as such are committed to raising the funds for the necessary repair work. Estimates suggest the refurbishment will cost around £66,000, which is quite an overwhelming sum for our small community to raise.

“We are extremely grateful to Bloor Homes for their generous donation. It is thanks to this and the support from other local companies and organisations, that we have raised some £29,000 so far towards the work.

“There is still a long way to go, but we are hopeful our fundraising target will be met and we can safeguard the future of the tower.”
