New Homes in South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire is a ceremonial county in the north of England. Though a largely urban county, the county has its fair share of smaller villages too.
If you’re considering one of our new homes in South Yorkshire, below are a few facts about the county you should know.
Where is South Yorkshire?
South Yorkshire is located within the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England, just south of Leeds and just east of Manchester. The county has four cities and three motorways - the M1, the M18, and the M180 - and borders the Peak District to the west.
Transport in South Yorkshire
There are 29 train stations across the metropolitan areas of South Yorkshire, operating railway lines such as the East Midlands Railway, Northern, and TransPennine Express. Whilst South Yorkshire’s many stations ensure that it’s easy to get across the county, stations in larger cities like Sheffield also operate regular services to the likes of Manchester, Leeds, York, Nottingham.
South Yorkshire’s motorways - the M1, the M18, and the M180 - offer direct routes to London, Leeds, Hatfield, Rotherham, and Goole, while the A-roads connect the county to Manchester through the peaks.
Sheffield has its own tram network connecting Rotherham and its suburbs, allowing for easy commutes between the towns.
Places to live in South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire, alongside its many smaller towns, is home to four metropolitan boroughs. These are:
Sheffield
Sheffield is the largest of the cities in South Yorkshire. Sheffield has its own tram network (the South Yorkshire Supertram) as well as six train stations scattered across the city that offer links to the likes of London, Manchester and Leeds.
Despite being largely urban, people living in Sheffield enjoy easy access to the Peak District and the Yorkshire countryside.
Doncaster
Doncaster, along with Sheffield, is one of South Yorkshire’s major cities. The city is quite the culture and leisure hub, being home to both the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as well as several notable theatres, including the 620-seater, Cast.
As a major city, Doncaster also has excellent transport links, with several trains running from Doncaster to cities like London, Leeds and Edinburgh.
Barnsley
Barnsley is one of the county’s greenest towns, being surrounded by fields and hills and part of the region’s green belt.
The town is notable for its many parks, including Locke Park and Dearne Valley Country Park, as well as its nature reserves, gardens and Grade I-listed buildings, like Wentworth Castle.
Rotherham
Rotherham is prominent market town in South Yorkshire. Its nature reserves, including the popular Rother Valley Country Park, alongside its National Trust buildings, like Wentworth Woodhouse, contribute to Rotherham’s more rural aesthetic.
Well-connected to other cities and town in South Yorkshire, the town’s main train station is Rotherham Central, where you can catch trains to the likes of Sheffield and Doncaster, as well as to Leeds in West Yorkshire.
