Find out moreShowhomes can look very desirable, but before you visit, try and decide on what’s essential for you and what isn’t. On show home visits it can be easy to get carried away with a house type or style which is out of your budget.
You may want to consider, for example:
- How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need?
- Are you looking for open plan living?
- Do you prefer one, two or three storey living?
- Are you after a detached, semi-detached or attached property?
It’s worth finding out about the build stage when buying a new build home, or homes you’re interested in. You may be able to buy a home that’s ‘off-plan’, meaning you’re making the purchase before the building work has started or is in the very early phase of construction. This can have some great advantages, including the chance to personalise your home, for example fixtures and fittings like the kitchen style and finish.
And if you’re looking to create your own style through any additional options or upgrades - whether it’s a new kitchen appliance, fitted wardrobes, or a bathroom upgrade - be sure to find out what’s included as standard and what’s available as an ‘extra’. There will often be signs on show as you walk around the showhome to keep you informed on options for personalisation.
Once you’re at the show home, there are some important points to bear in mind, and things you can do to make the most of your tour:
- Remember that a show home is just that, for show! All the interiors in a new Bloor home are neutral – ready for you to transform into something that reflects your style and personality.
- Take measurements of large items such as dining tables and sofas to give you an idea of suitable sizes. You’ll want to make sure your existing furniture will fit, and if it doesn’t, you’ll have an idea of dimensions for any new items you want to buy.
- It’s also important to check that the amount of storage in the property is right for your needs. Do you need a big loft space , a roomy garage or just somewhere to store the vacuum and ironing board?
- Take a note of the orientation of the show home you’re in. This will be important if you like the way the light falls in the home or garden and means you’ll need to find a plot with the same orientation to get the same ambience in the home.
- Take plenty of photos or some video footage so you don’t forget your visit. You may be inspired by the interior décor but also capture the style of the windows, doors, kitchen layout etc so you can compare and contrast with other showhomes you may view.
You’ll have the full attention of the Sales Advisor and it’s the perfect opportunity to learn as much as possible. Possible questions could include:
- What is the build schedule for the home style(s) you’re interested in? This is so you’ll know the timescales and when they might be ready to move into. Your chosen plot could be a number of months from completion if you’re buying off-plan.
- What kind of warranty is on offer, and has the developer won any awards recently? Any NHBC Pride in the Job awards signage will give you a good indication of the standards the home will be built to. Also, check whether the property is covered by the NHBC’s ten-year Buildmark warranty like all Bloor homes are.
- If you think you may be close to finding the perfect home for you then don’t forget to ask about the reservation process. Find out how to secure your new home with a deposit.
- Don’t forget about the surrounding site and community surrounding the homes.
- Look for open spaces, play areas, parkland, local shops and any new facilities being built such as GP surgeries and schools.
- What are the commuting links like for any areas you visit regularly?
Last but not least, ensure you listen to any safety instructions you’re given after arriving on site as the showhome is likely to be on an active building site. Be prepared to put on a hard hat and a high visibility vest!
