Sponsored bike ride boosts Goostrey Scout hut fundraising appeal
13/09/2016 - General
The fundraising appeal for a new Scout hut in Goostrey has received a £500 boost from Bloor Homes.
The developer, which is building at The Woodlands development in the village, sponsored local resident Kerry Comb as she took part in a 55-mile bike ride to support the appeal.
Kerry Comb, 40, who is moving into a new house at the development, was one of around 60 riders to complete the gruelling challenge, which started and finished in Goostrey, and took in some of the most scenic parts of Cheshire inbetween.
The First Goostrey Scouts are leading the appeal to raise £250,000 to pay for a new Scout hut to be built on the site of the former disused facility, which has now been demolished.
Around £200,000 has now been raised through sponsorship, donations and grants from both Goostrey Parish Council and WREN. As well as the Scouts, it is envisaged that other community groups, such as youth clubs and the pre-school will use the new building. Kerry, who is treasurer at the pre-school, said the new Scout hut will be a major improvement on their existing building. She said: “We currently operate out of the very old Methodist hall where there is no outdoor space for the children. We are hoping the new Scout hut will have an all-weather play area with soft play equipment which will provide a much more enriching environment for the children.”
Kerry, who took up cycling a couple of years ago, completed the sponsored bike ride, which was organised by Goostrey Wheelers, in a very credible three hours and 33 minutes.
She said: “I have done that distance before but never that quickly. It was a really enjoyable ride but very tiring and it was quite a relief to get to the finish line. It was nice to contribute towards the fundraising effort and I’m extremely grateful to Bloor Homes for their generous donation.”
Tina Avis-Edwards, Regional Sales Director at Bloor Homes North West, said: “The new Scout hut in Goostrey will be a wonderful new facility for the whole community, including residents who will be moving into The Woodlands development. “Kerry did fantastically well to finish the ride in such a quick time and we were delighted to sponsor her and support the appeal.”
