The development, known as Oakwood Hill, will include a range of two to four-bedroom properties.
Outline planning permission for the development was granted by Braintree District Council in June last year.
The proposals also include 5.6 acres of public open space, a new convenience store, allotments and financial contributions towards community infrastructure.
Andrew Marns, Regional Managing Director for Bloor Homes Eastern, said: “We are pleased to have acquired the land for our Oakwood Hill development at Halstead, which will provide quality new housing for the area.
“The development has been carefully designed to blend in sympathetically with its surroundings, with a landscaped buffer along the length of the development facing Oak Road, and will deliver a variety of homes to cater for a wide range of buyers.
“We have submitted a reserved matters application for the first phase of 192 homes at the site, and subject to planning approval, we hope to start work on site in the spring.”
