The brownfield land on the north eastern edge of Saffron Walden will be transformed into a collection of new homes.

Uttlesford District Council’s planning committee voted to grant detailed planning permission for the scheme, which had received outline consent in November 2014.

The Mortimers Gate development will include a range of two to four-bedroom homes.

All garages at the development will have car charging points for electric vehicles, while a network of pedestrian and cycle paths will be created.

The development will also provide areas of open space, including a children’s play area, trim trail, a mini grass football pitch, and funding of more than £1 million towards local services and infrastructure.

Work is expected to begin on site in March, with the first homes due to be released for sale in the summer.

Andrew Marns, Regional Managing Director at Bloor Homes Eastern, said: “We have worked closely with both the district and town councils to design a high quality scheme which will deliver a range of benefits for the local community, and we are pleased this has been recognised by the planning committee.

“As well as providing much-needed new housing close to Saffron Walden’s historic town centre, Mortimers Gate will transform the appearance of this brownfield site and enhance its biodiversity through the introduction of a wildlife corridor.

“Areas of public open space and sporting facilities will be provided for local residents, including a trim trail for teenagers which has been added at the request of the town council.

“Mortimers Gate will feature a wide range of house types and design features, creating a varied and attractive neighbourhood which reflects the character of the area.

“We aim to start work on the first homes in March and look forward to welcoming visitors to the development when the sales office opens in the Summer.”
